Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
