McDonald's Netherlands Takes Down Artificial Intelligence Festive Advertisement In the Wake of Backlash.
The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas advertisement produced using generative AI following receiving widespread criticism on social media.
The brief film was developed with the help of AI video tools and was originally released on the YouTube channel for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.
Social Media Response and Removal
Soon after it aired, audiences online criticized the use of AI in the film. Several labeled it "uncanny" and "awkwardly stitched together".
"This incident is an important learning as we examine the proper application of Artificial Intelligence," said a representative from the company.
The advert was developed for McDonald's by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It showed a series of scenarios that might go awry over the Christmas break, under the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".
The Movement of AI Commercials
Adverts that feature AI-created content have become a increasing trend among large brands, notably for the Christmas campaign season.
- Another beverage giant has similarly released consecutive AI-created holiday ads.
- Technical Challenges: Because segments created using generative AI are more likely to degrade the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
- Broader Implications: The video also raised fears about job displacement in the advertising sector, with some commenters stating it might negatively impact work for production staff.
Defense from the Production Company
Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.
According to her, the creation required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "countless iterations" which were then shaped in post-production "in the same way we would on any traditional production".
"This wasn't an experiment," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a proper commercial."
Mixed Audience Sentiment
While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the response for some AI-generated campaigns has been divisive.
For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas spot from another major brand according to analysis achieved a significant "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.
However, other businesses have also received scrutiny for using the technique in advertising. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some called "cheap" and "uncanny".
The situation highlights the continuing debate within the marketing and production sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and audience reception.
